Home Town or Home Community:
Battleford, SK
Our Story:
This shrine was started by two Oblate Brothers, Andreas Cingel and Walter Demong. They hauled stones from neighboring fields for the grotto. Five to six Oblate Brothers worked on the grotto. The service road to it was made by fresno and horses. Dirt was hauled in. Eventually the grotto was wired for lights, landscaped with flowers and fruit trees. The Lourdes statue was donated by the parents of Brother Walter.
The location of the shrine is south of the Town of Battleford. It is located one km. from Government House on the Oblate farm.

Marian Shrine at Battleford
Place Name: Battleford, SK
At first, mass was celebrated at the shrine. Later, Bishop Adam Exner, OMI, dedicated the site. After a period of neglect, Fr. Reb Materi, OMI, encouraged its restoration in 1979.
In recent years the people from the Battlefords and surrounding areas have participated with the Oblate community in making annual pilgrimages on August 15, and to visit the shrine frequently.
